Questions
Can phones scan Micro QR or rMQR?+
Most phone camera apps cannot. Micro QR and rMQR are made for industrial and handheld 2D scanners, which read them on parts, circuit boards and small labels. For anything the public will scan, use a standard QR code.
How much fits in a Micro QR code?+
Very little: up to 35 digits, 21 capitals and digits, or 15 bytes in the largest size, M4, at level L. M1 holds 5 digits. Capitals and digits pack tighter than lowercase letters.
What is rMQR?+
Rectangular Micro QR, standardized as ISO/IEC 23941 in 2022. It comes in 32 sizes from 7 × 43 to 17 × 139 modules, for narrow spaces where a square code will not fit, and holds up to 361 digits.
Why does Micro QR have one finder pattern?+
A standard QR code has three corner squares; Micro QR has one, which saves space. It also needs only a 2-module quiet zone instead of 4.
Which error correction levels are there?+
Micro QR offers L and M, plus Q in M4 only; M1 only detects errors. rMQR offers M and H.

- QR code versionA QR code version is the size of the symbol, numbered 1 to 40. Version 1 is 21 × 21 modules and each version adds 4 modules per side, up to 177 × 177 modules for version 40.
- Data capacityData capacity is how much a QR code can hold. The largest, version 40 at level L, stores up to 7,089 digits, 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 2,953 bytes; smaller codes and higher error correction hold less.
- Micro QR codeA Micro QR code is a smaller relative of the QR code with a single finder pattern. It comes in four sizes, M1 to M4, from 11×11 to 17×17 modules, and holds up to 35 digits.
- ISO/IEC 18004ISO/IEC 18004 is the international standard for the QR code and Micro QR code. It defines the symbol structure, encoding modes, error correction and reference decoding, and was first published in 2000.
