PromptPay QR

Also called: Thai QR Payment, PromptPay

Definition

A PromptPay QR code is a Thai payment QR code that sends money through PromptPay, Thailand’s national instant transfer service, using a mobile number or national ID as the key.

What PromptPay is

PromptPay is Thailand’s national instant payment service, launched in 2017 under the National e-Payment program with oversight from the Bank of Thailand. Instead of a bank account number, a person links a mobile phone number or national ID number to their account, and businesses can register a tax ID. Transfers go through between participating banks and e-wallets almost immediately.

PromptPay QR codes follow the Thai QR Payment standard, which is based on the EMVCo Merchant-Presented Mode format. Any Thai banking app that supports Thai QR Payment can scan them.

What the code contains

A PromptPay QR payload holds the PromptPay key inside a merchant account template, the currency code 764 (Thai baht) and the country code TH, and ends with the EMV CRC checksum. A person-to-person code usually has no amount, so the payer types it in. A shop or invoice code can include a fixed amount and, for bill payment, a biller ID and reference numbers.

  • Mobile phone number
  • National ID number (13 digits)
  • Tax ID for businesses
  • E-wallet ID for some wallet accounts

Frequently asked questions

Can a PromptPay QR code be scanned by any Thai bank app?

Yes, PromptPay codes follow the shared Thai QR Payment standard, so participating Thai banking and wallet apps can read them.

Should I use my phone number or ID number for a PromptPay QR code?

Either works if it is registered to your account. A phone number is common for personal use, and it avoids printing your national ID number.
