Selling in shops or online marketplaces?
EAN and UPC numbers must be licensed from GS1. Retailers and marketplaces check that a number belongs to your brand, and a made-up or resold number can clash with someone else's product. Get a company prefix, or single GTINs where offered, from your local GS1 member organization, then make the barcode here. ITF-14 carries the GTIN of a case. Code 128 and Code 39 are for your own labels, stock and assets, and need no registration.

Questions
Can I make up my own EAN or UPC number?+
Not for products sold in shops or on marketplaces. Retail numbers (GTINs) are licensed from GS1 to a brand, and retailers check them. A made-up or resold number can clash with another product. Code 128 and Code 39 are free to use for your own labels, stock and assets.
What is a check digit?+
The last digit of an EAN, UPC or ITF-14 number, calculated from the others with GS1’s mod-10 rule. Scanners use it to catch misreads. Enter the number without it and the generator adds it; enter it and the generator tells you if it is wrong and what it should be.
Which format should I download for print?+
SVG or PDF. Both are vectors, so the bars keep exact widths at any size. If you must use PNG, pick the resolution of the printer; the file is saved at that DPI so it places at the right size.
What is the quiet zone?+
The blank margin either side of the bars. Scanners need it to find where the barcode starts and ends: 11 modules left and 7 right for EAN-13, 9 each side for UPC-A, and 10 for ITF-14 and Code 128. The downloads include it, so do not crop it or let artwork crowd it.
Can I make the barcode smaller or shorter?+
EAN and UPC can scale from 80% to 200% of the nominal size. Cutting the bar height, called truncation, makes retail barcodes harder to scan and GS1 advises against it. Test a printed sample with a scanner before a full run.
