Direct store URLs
Each store has its own address format. An iOS app page lives at a URL like https://apps.apple.com/app/id123456789, and an Android app page at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.example.app, where the id is the app’s package name.
A QR code with one of these URLs works well when the audience uses one platform. When it does not, half the people scanning land in the wrong store.
One code for both stores
A single app download code usually points to a redirect link rather than to either store. When the phone opens the link, the server reads the browser’s user agent, detects iOS or Android, and forwards to the right store page.
A good redirect also has a fallback for desktops and other devices, such as a landing page with both store badges. Because the destination lives on the server, the store links can be updated later without reprinting the code, and scans can be counted.
- iPhone and iPad: forward to apps.apple.com
- Android: forward to play.google.com
- Desktop or unknown: show a page with both links
- Optional: open the app directly if it is already installed
Opening the app itself
Store links always open the store, even if the app is installed. To open a specific screen inside an installed app, apps use deep links, such as universal links on iOS or app links on Android, often with a store page as the fallback when the app is missing.
