Ask three printers for the QR code minimum size for print and you will get three numbers. The honest answer is that it depends on the code, the surface, and how far away the phone will be. What is the minimum size for a printed QR code?
Start with distance, because size follows from it. A common rule of thumb is that a QR code should be about one tenth of the distance it will be scanned from. A card read from 15 cm can carry a 1.5 cm code. A shelf label read from arm's length wants 2 to 3 cm. A poster read from a meter and a half needs a code around 15 cm. The rule assumes a clean code with good contrast on a flat, matte surface. Every departure from that pushes the minimum up: glossy stock, curved packaging, a busy image behind the dots, or dim light.
For reference, in the units people search for:
- 1.5 cm is 15 mm, or about 0.6 inches
- 2 cm is 20 mm, or about 0.8 inches
- 4 cm is 40 mm, or about 1.6 inches
Pixels are not a print measurement. A "qr code minimum size in pixels" only matters on a screen, where the code should be large enough that a phone camera sees it clearly from a normal viewing distance. For print, download at full resolution and let the layout decide the physical size.
What QR code size works on a business card?
A standard card is 3.5 by 2 inches, roughly 89 by 51 mm. A code between 1.5 cm and 2 cm fits comfortably with room for a name and a line of contact details. Below 1.5 cm you are into territory where paper texture and ink spread start to matter more than the design, and where most phones need a second or two to focus.

How do you print a small QR code so it scans?
Small codes leave less room for error, so the print choices matter more than they do on a poster.
Contrast first. Dark dots on a light area of the image, or the reverse, read better than mid-tones. If your image is soft and low-contrast, pick a crop with a clear light-and-dark structure for the code area, or change the dot color after generation. The code stays the same when you restyle it.
Matte beats gloss. Gloss laminate, UV coating, and shiny plastics reflect light straight into the lens. At poster size that is an annoyance; at 1.5 cm it is a failure. Ask for matte or soft-touch stock, or a matte varnish over the code.
Give it space. Keep clear space around the code, free of text, borders, and fold lines. Do not run it to the edge of a label.
Flat, not curved. A tightly curved bottle or a tube bends the code. Put small codes on the flattest face available.
Do not shrink the file. Download the 2048px master and place it at the final size in your layout. Do not export a small copy from another tool and then scale it up or down again.
Print one proof. Before the full run, print a single card, label, or sticker on the real stock with the real finish. Scan it from hand distance with two different phones, in the light where it will be used. This step catches paper and coating problems that no software can predict.

Why does a small QR code fail even when it is big enough?
The size was right, and it still does not read. The usual causes:
- Glare. Move the card and the phone; if it suddenly reads, the finish is the problem.
- Low light. A restaurant table at night is harder than a desk lamp. Menus and table tents should stay at 3 cm or more, and the restaurant and hotel post has more on that.
- A busy image behind the code. This is what the verdict catches. A "scans up close only" result is acceptable on a card, but if you want extra headroom, choose a calmer crop.
- Ink spread. Cheap uncoated paper can blur fine detail. A proof shows this immediately.
- The wrong build. A Standard code printed at 1.5 cm is not verified at that size. Regenerate with Small print.
