A QR code for product packaging has to do three things: sit where a shopper can reach it, be big enough for the distance it is scanned from, and survive the substrate and finish. Get those right and the code can look like part of the artwork instead of a sticker. This guide covers the design rules, the proofing routine, and why the link behind the code should be editable.
Where should a QR code go on packaging?
Put it where the pack is flat and where a hand naturally holds it: the back or side panel of a carton, the front or back label of a bottle rather than the shoulder, the flat area of a pouch away from the seal and the gusset.
Three placements fail often:
- Over a fold, crease or seam. The code bends and one half sits in shadow.
- On a tight curve. Small jars and cans wrap the code around the surface, and you are gambling with the print run.
- Under a flap, a price sticker or a shelf-ready tray. The code is fine; nobody sees it.
Also think about the shelf. A front-of-pack code is seen from a meter away; a back-panel code is seen from 20 to 30 cm once the product is in hand. Those are different sizes and different jobs. Most brands do better with a back-panel code next to a short line saying what the scan gives the shopper: a recipe, how to recycle, product registration. "Scan for recipes" outperforms a naked code every time.
How big does a QR code on packaging need to be?
Size follows scan distance. A shopper scanning a pack in hand holds the phone 20 to 30 cm away, so a code 2 to 3 cm across is comfortable. A code meant to be scanned on shelf, without picking the product up, needs 4 cm and up because the phone is farther away and the light is worse.
AriaQR has two builds for this reason. The Standard build is verified for screens and prints of 4 cm and up. The Small print build is verified down to about 1.5 cm, which covers labels, stickers, and the small panel on a sachet or a cosmetics box. Pick the build by the smallest size the code will ever be printed at. If the same code runs on a shipper and a sachet, build for the sachet. Every code is verified on real decoders under real-world conditions before you download it: distance, angle, low light, small size. You get a verdict, "verified" or "scans up close only." For packaging, treat "scans up close only" as a stop sign unless the code is only ever scanned in hand.
Which substrates and finishes cause problems?
Ink spreads on uncoated board, gloss varnish throws reflections, and shrink sleeves stretch. Here is the short list.

One more note: print the code in the same process inks as the rest of the panel, not a metallic or special ink, so registration is not a factor.
How do you put the code inside the pack artwork?
This is where branded packaging separates from a sticker. With AriaQR the picture stays the picture and the code lives in it as a field of dots. One rule: the code was verified on the artwork you uploaded. If the designer later moves or rescales it in the layout tool, make a new one. It takes a minute and saves a reprint.
How do you proof a packaging QR code before the print run?
Screen proofs lie. Here is a proofing routine that takes an afternoon:
- Print the panel at 100 percent scale on the closest stock you have; the real board is best.
- Scan with three phones: a recent iPhone, a recent Android, and one a few years old, using the native camera.
- Scan under aisle light: fluorescent from above, shadow from the shelf lip.
- Scan at an angle. Nobody holds a phone perfectly square to a box.
- If the pack is curved, wrap the proof around the real container and scan again.
- Sign off the press proof, not the PDF. Ink gain, varnish and die-cut position all show up there.
Do this once per size; a shipper, a carton and a label are three proofs.
What happens when the pack outlives the campaign?
Packaging runs are long. A carton printed this quarter may still be on shelf a year from now, and the page it links to will have moved. The code should carry a dynamic link, not a hard-coded URL.
AriaQR codes are dynamic by default: the code encodes a short link, so the destination can be changed after printing and every scan is tracked. Because scans are tracked, packaging becomes a measurement channel: total scans, scans per day, device split, and country, region and city when the network allows, with no cookies and no permission prompts.
